DJ Daniela, the beauty behind the beats, has contributed a unique sound and vibe to the Bay Area hip-hop and soulful house scenes. She's held down residencies at San Francisco's premiere parties including: Remedy, Sophie's, and Soul Café and is one of the co-founders of the internationally celebrated Oakland underground house music party Brothers and Sisters.
Growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area, Daniela was feeling beats from a young age. Mixing everything on her Hitachi radio cassette recorder, from Run DMC, Kraftwerk, Bambataa, Egyptian Lover, Michael Jackson, Prince, The Police, to The Cure... her ear was open wide and she absorbed it all.
After receiving a B.S. in Nutrition from U.C. Berkeley and working in the nonprofit sector as a Registered Dietitian, the calling came loud and clear for Daniela to pursue her musical passions. She got her hands on a loaner pair of Technics and soon was holding down the opening slot at Monday night hot spot, Soul Cafe at Blondie's No Bar & Grill.
Daniela quickly came into her eclectic style and developed a feverish following. Named resident DJ at legendary parties such as Vanity, Das Klub, and the Phoenix Monthly's, she has since spun alongside legends like Biz Markie, Kid Capri and Bay Area's own Jerry Ross, Mind Motion, and DJ Dedan. "It doesn't intimidate me, being a female behind the decks; I feel it works to my advantage. I bring a fresh energy and vibe because I’m open and not limited. I play from the heart, what I feel, and what moves me", relates Daniela.
Nearly nine years later, Daniela is still taking people on incredible musical journeys with thoughtful blends of new and classic hip-hop, house, soul, and R&B, "As a DJ you have to take chances. Anyone can play what people want and expect. To really move people, you have to make it about good music, surprise them, and give them what they really need."
In her vocation as Project Coordinator for a Berkeley non-profit, Daniela combined her passion for music with her interest in the community. Collaborating with local artists, she developed the award-winning multi-media kit "P.H.A.T." (Promoting Healthy Activities Together), stressing the importance of healthy eating and exercise within a hip-hop cultural context. Daniela is curently taking time off from her community efforts and is pursuing her graduate degree in Urban Policy in New York City. She is interested in addressing issues that affect young people and working towards creating safe and thriving living environments in low-income urban communities. Keep your eyes and ears open as she introduces herself to the Brooklyn music scene.
